Mediterranean Breakfast Ideas to Start Your Day

A fresh Mediterranean-style breakfast spread

Breakfast around the Mediterranean is relaxed, fresh and full of flavour. Instead of one big dish, you get a table of small plates: good bread, olive oil, vegetables, cheese and eggs, eaten slowly with coffee or tea. When I started cooking beyond Indian food in London, this was the style of morning meal that surprised me most. It felt light yet generous, and it was so easy to prepare for guests.

Here are the ideas that will bring that spirit to your own kitchen, along with tips for putting a beautiful spread together without stress.

The Mediterranean breakfast philosophy

The heart of a Mediterranean breakfast is simple, seasonal ingredients treated with respect. Tomatoes should taste like tomatoes, olive oil should be fruity and fragrant, and bread should be fresh. There’s little cooking involved and very little waste, because most items are served as they are. It’s also a social meal, designed to be shared at the table rather than eaten in a rush.

Shakshuka

Eggs poached in a spiced tomato and pepper sauce, served straight from the pan with bread for dipping. It’s hearty, colourful and ready in about 30 minutes. Cook the sauce until it’s thick and jammy before adding the eggs, so the yolks stay runny while the whites set. Finish with fresh coriander or parsley and crumbled feta. See our full Shakshuka recipe.

Fresh vegetable plate

Sliced tomatoes, cucumber and olives dressed with olive oil, salt and a pinch of oregano. Simple, refreshing and perfect on a warm morning. Add radishes, green peppers or a few sprigs of mint for variety. The secret is to let the tomatoes sit with a little salt for a few minutes so they release their sweet juices.

Labneh or thick yogurt

Creamy, tangy labneh drizzled with olive oil and a sprinkle of za’atar or herbs makes a lovely spread for bread. You can make labneh at home by straining plain yogurt through a clean cloth overnight, until it’s thick enough to scoop. Stir in a pinch of salt before straining for the best flavour.

Boiled or fried eggs

Soft-boiled eggs with herbs, or a simple fried egg with a runny yolk, sit well alongside salty cheese and olives. A few drops of olive oil and a sprinkle of flaky salt are all they need. For a change, try menemen, the Turkish scramble of eggs, tomato and peppers.

Cheese and olives

Salty feta, halloumi or soft white cheese, paired with green and black olives, add savoury depth to the table. Halloumi, grilled until golden, is a wonderful warm addition. If your olives come in brine, rinse them and dress them with a little olive oil, lemon zest and chilli flakes.

Bread, honey and fruit

Finish with warm bread, a spoonful of honey, ripe figs, dates or seasonal fruit for a touch of sweetness. Thick honey on yogurt or on a piece of fresh bread with butter is a simple pleasure. In summer, juicy melon, grapes and peaches are lovely, while in winter, oranges and pomegranate are perfect.

How to put it together

  • Pick one warm dish, such as shakshuka or eggs.
  • Add two cold plates, such as vegetables and a dip.
  • Serve plenty of fresh bread and good olive oil for dipping.
  • Add a salty element, like olives or cheese.
  • Finish with something sweet, like honey, fruit or yogurt.

Weekday-friendly versions

You don’t need a full spread on a busy morning. A plate with sliced tomato, cucumber, a boiled egg, a few olives and a piece of bread is a perfectly good Mediterranean breakfast, and it takes five minutes. Prepare the labneh or dips on Sunday, and use them through the week.

Drinks to serve

Strong Turkish coffee, sweet mint tea or a simple glass of fresh orange juice all go beautifully. If you’re serving a crowd, set out a pot of tea and a jug of water with lemon slices so that people can help themselves.
